Ember of Vareth
Ember of Vareth is the rare mobile RPG where the combat and the story pull in the same direction. You build a small party, each member with a distinct role, and fights play out on a grid where positioning matters as much as raw stats. We found ourselves genuinely thinking before every turn rather than tapping auto-battle.
The writing is tighter than most mobile RPGs. Side quests are short and self-contained, which suits a game you dip into on the bus. Gear progression is steady without demanding grind, and the skill trees give real choices instead of filler nodes.
Menus can get busy, and the first hour throws a lot of systems at you at once. Push past that and it opens into one of the more satisfying tactical RPGs we've played on a phone this year.
What we liked
- Thoughtful grid-based combat
- Writing that doesn't overstay its welcome
- Fair progression without heavy grind
