Reading enemy waves before they hit
The single biggest improvement in my tower defence play came from a boring habit: actually reading the wave preview. Most of these games tell you what's coming — fast swarms, armoured units, flyers — and most players, including past me, ignore it.
Once you start matching your build to the preview, the whole genre shifts from reactive to proactive. Flyers coming? You want anti-air up before they spawn, not scrambling mid-wave. A dense swarm? Splash damage earns its cost.
It sounds obvious written down, but under pressure it's easy to just plop towers wherever. Slow down, read the preview, place with intent. Your win rate climbs almost immediately.
This holds across nearly every lane defence I've reviewed, including the tighter strategy hybrids. The games reward foresight; they just don't force it on you.
